The maendeleo - Nutrition and Water Sanitation Programme is based in Turkana in the northwest of Kenya. When we, the maendeleo - board, first visited the region with Daniel Murirui, the bishop of the „Living Faith Outreach Centre" in Eldoret, we had to ascertain that the poor population in rural areas lacks nourishments and especially clean water. The people, especially the children, suffer from malnutrition and diseases, caused by polluted water.
Together with our african maendeleo - representatives Professor David Kikaya and qualified agricultural economist Moses Tenai we initiated the maendeleo - Nutrition and Water Sanitation Programme. Under the programme we visit schools in the rural areas, including the ones in Lokichorgio, Lodwar, Lokichar and Turkwa and explain the usage of the moringatree. Subsequently to the workshop the trees will be planted on sources of water together with the teachers and children.
The moringatree grows fast and finds optimal conditions of growth even in the warm, sandy and arid area of Turkana. We use it for our maendeleo - Nutrition and Water Sanitation Programme to give the children a new possibility for a adequate nutrition. The leaves of the moringatree are an important vitamin and nutrient supplier. They get cleansed, dryed and pounded and then additionally stirred in the meals of the children.
Besides the moringa seeds are used to improve the living conditions. According to studies they clean up to 99% of the water. For example the diseases causing samonellae, that are common in polluted water, can be diminished strinkingly.
To implement the Turkana - Nutrition and Water Sanitation Programme in the best possible way, the branch office maendeleo - Kenya Medicinal Plant Conservationist based in Lodwar was founded. This officially sanctioned maendeleo - branch guarantees the legal competence of our association in Kenya and authorises us e.g. to work offically with healing plants and herbs and also to sell our products.
